However, given the significant costs and long timeline associated with ballot initiatives, legislative efforts have recently proven to be ripe for immediate reform These efforts have several advantages:

  • More adaptable and amendable than rigid ballot initiatives

  • Cost significantly less than ballot initiatives or federal campaigns

  • Incentivize government support for further development and access

2. Identify exceptional organizations

Investing in a legislative effort requires identifying organizations that are doing impactful work. These exceptional organizations aren’t always the loudest, as they often work in the background, bridging a coalition of organizations, legislators, and more together for effective dialogue. There are a number of key aspects of these organizations:

  • Proven leadership with deep policy expertise and a record of legislative wins

  • Active organizers who maintain a strong presence at conferences, forums, and strategic events

  • Extensive networks that connect directly to policymakers and decision-shapers

3. Encourage further investment

Psychedelic policy reform across the US is a costly endeavor, but funders have many mechanisms at their disposal to continue excitement among current investors and open the industry for greater funding sources. Some of these are:

  • Simply be public about their investments, spreading the positive potential of psychedelics

  • Organize conventions between funders to encourage further donation and maintain excitement

  • Utilize creative funding mechanisms, like challenge grants and matched giving
